Description: Album of two hundred and ninety black and white photographs taken about 1934 by Captain R.S. Alston of Bristol with information by W Kendall Andrew and compiled by Arthur Stowers, former President of the Newcomen Society. The majority of these Cornish Engines are working in the clay country of St. Austell. The photographs show interior views of the main cylinders with automatic governors and working gear and valve linkage along with the piston rod and stuffing box, main bearings and pedestals and beam. Engines include Blackpool, Bloomdale, Burthy, Carpalla, Caudledown, Charlestown Foundry, Cleaves, Goonbarrow, Goonvean, Greensplat, Gunheath, Hallaze, Hallew, Halviggan, Hendra, Wheal Martyn, Ninestones, Parkandillack, Penhale, Wheal Remfry, Rockhill, Rostowrack, Shilton, Single Rose, Western Trelavour, Trenance, Treviscoe, Virginia, Wheal Agar, Carn Brea, South Crofty New Cook’s Shaft, South Crofty Robinson’s, Dolcoath Harriets, Dolcoath Stray Park, Dolcoath Williams, Levant, East Pool, East Pool Taylor’s, Tincroft, Great Wheal Busy, Killifreth, Wheal Kitty, Wheal Martha, Liskeard Brewery engine.
